No mention was made of Globocnik’s Treblinka, Sobibor, or Belzec, because all had been dismantled and all the permanent structures, including the gassing facilities, demolished.

Majdanek

Majdanek, or more properly, Konzentrationslager, then Kriegsgefangenenlager SS Lublin, and finally, from 1943 onward, Konzentrationslager Lublin, has been described as the cornerstone of Himmler’s planned empire in the East. Himmler’s order to build it was given during his important July 1941 visit to the city.

Originally, then, the Lublin camp was to have been a concentration camp consisting [of] an extension of the then SS force labor camp in Lipowa Street. That the camp was to be of that nature is evidenced by the fact that the Reich’s Inspectorate for Concentration Camps (later called Amstgruppe D in the WVHA) participated in its organization and construction. However, the site of the proposed camp turned out to be inadequate, and on 22 September 1941, Heinz Kammler, head of Office II in WVHA, ordered work to commence immediately on the construction for 60,000 prisoners. Four days later, for the purposes of setting up a “camp for POWs” the governor of Lublin Ernst Zörner transferred some 270 hectares in the eastern part of the town to the SS. This included the district of Kosminek, and the grounds of the villages of Dziesiata, Abramowice and Kalinowka. Almost simultaneously, on September 27th, Kammler issued urgent orders for the construction of the camp in Lublin, which was to have been suitable for 50,000 POWs.26
